Social Media 101

Social Media 101

Social media can be so overwhelming. There are videos, templates, posts, stories, blogs, articles, and that’s only skimming the surface. There are a few basic principles that can really help, and we want to share them with you.

  1. Consistency: Above all else, consistency is key. If you want the algorithm to recognize you as someone consumers want to listen to, you need to be getting more content out there. Try to go for a relatively consistent posting schedule. I recommend at least twice a week, and going up to three or four times a week.
  2. Quality: Getting more content out there doesn’t mean sacrificing quality. Google’s E-E-A-T algorithm (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness) can come into play here, even though we’re talking about social media, not search engines. What does this mean for you? Focus on creating content that is in your field, that you have a lot of experience with, backed up with credible sources when necessary, and maintain a trustworthy reputation.
  3. Variety: Certain platforms prefer certain formats. For example, Instagram likes to promote their Reels feature (you may have noticed this if you’ve scrolled through your home page for any length of time!). You can take advantage of this and integrate reels into your posting schedule.
  4. Following: Encourage your congregation or friends and famiy to follow your social media. Having a follower base already tells the algorithm that your content is valuable, and it will show your content to more people. Also, the more followers you have, regardless of audience, demographic, etc., the more the algorithm will prioritize your content.
  5. Sharing: Encourage your followers to share your content to their stories, especially when they resonate with the message or regularly attend your church. When someone with a personal tie to your content shares it, more non-followers will see your content. This tells the algorithm that your content has meaning and weight, and once again, will show your content to others outside of your following.

The world of social media is ever evolving, but these tips have stayed prominent for quite a while. They're not likely to go anywhere, so take advantage of that by following the above tips!
